Can murder ever be justified?
Abstract

Incandescent is a murder mystery set in New York City during the Roaring ‘20s. The story, written in a blended cozy-thriller style, is a first attempt at novel-writing by Anaïs Yumi Weiss. The goal of this project: to provoke the reader to examine their own moral code by presenting conflicted individuals, none of whom are either completely innocent or entirely culpable. As in real life, the characters do not face black and white choices, but are rather drawn into a grey zone. The reader is asked to answer the question: Did Dr. Flinn deserve to die? This book is the result of a lifetime interest in period dramas, “whodunits,” and Jazz Age culture, a familiarity with New York City and over a year of research into its history. Lacking prior experience in novel-writing, the author looked to the works of Christie, Fitzgerald, Austen and creative writing instructors for inspiration. The story unfolds as would a movie, with rich scenery and dialogue employing the accents, slang and idioms of the era. Ms. Weiss hopes that the reader will be pulled into her world – within the pages of Incandescent.
